Bumping in Da Night (August 3)

The house was one of those old estates that were it in Manhattan would have long ago been split into overpriced apartments or sold to someone with more money than sense or a deep desire for privacy, It had fallen into disrepair due to legal issues over ownership and thus four of the ten windows that could be seen from the street were broken, the black iron gate preventing entrance had several bars missing and was covered in rust, and the three stories of the thin (for everywhere else) or thick (for New York) old home had seen much better nights. It was no wonder why the place had been called a haunted house - the grass on the front lawn was overgrown, loose shudders blew in the breeze of the early night and the more than one brick of the twenty foot path from the gate to the front door were missing. Even the nearest streetlight was out.

Standing in front of the building, it was easy to see why it was considered to be haunted.
"Decrepit building, fallen to shambles." The Dragon shook his head. "With some care, and investment, this would make a fine residence" he mumbled to himself.
He hadn't seen Garret yet, but then again, his attention was drawn thouroughly to the building.
And so, the kindred waited, watching the house, trying to sense... well, anything, really.

Garret pulled up and jumped out of his car, sighing as he reached back to grab his backpack.

"Welp. It looks like someone went through spooky writing for dummies's check list." he muttered coming up beside him. He has a camera already out and in night vision. "Jesus..."

"Well, I can see how people come to think this place is cursed or haunted. It looks scary, a textbook example of a cursed mansion if ever there was one. Personally, I think that is because we establish a link between derelict buildings with human death and disease. After all, what reason is there to let a majestic estate wither if not the owner's decline in health or sanity? A shame, really." He smiled. "Hello!"

"Or it could be an innate fear of dark places where no light shines. We understand that with in that the hunter lurks and the fact that no one is around means we are venerable and blind. Groping in the night." He grins "hello."

Garret pulls out his keys and moves forward towards the house. With a quick movement he opens the door sharply and flicks on a light, more for the camera than himself.

The professor went in, so the camera could see him. He took a good look around and said, with a hint of distaste "So untidy." Remembering their task, he pointed into the air, saying "As you can no doubt see, we have a plethora of dust flowing around. Now, if you consider our previous discussion, you will remember that the human mind is... impressionable. You do not need more than some poor lightning, an old, untidy, ragged building and an imaginative person, and you will come up with horror stories, ghosts that move through the air, the sighs of lovers longing for each other. You can observe these 'ghosts' over there, where the dust seems to suddenly part in the air. Hmpf. Merely aircurrents we ourselves introduced by opening the door, and changing the circulation in the room. Here, put your hand there, you can feel the draft. Follow it back to a crack or window, probably, too. However, a less scientific mind will be left with the impression of something- hahampf, please, excuse me- supernatural. Even more, this person will be absolutely convinced of the reality of it all. Other people sense this sincerety, and thus lend credence to something utterly false. And thus, superstitious falsehood spreads in a supposedly enlightened society." He had not realized he started to walk up and down in front of Garret and wave his hand occasionally, to underline a statement, like he used to do in his lectures. How strange. Old habits truly die hard, it seems. He stopped abruptly. "In any case, the 'parting of dust' can be considered thouroughly debunked with this, I hope. So, let us move on to the next supposedly unnatural event, shall we?"

The gate creaked open with a push. A strong push given the rust and lack of WD-40.

The Kindred had to avoid tripping on the brick path and when they made it to the porch the weathered wood seemed to sag slightly under their weight. Still the lock had long been broken off, so it was not a fight to get into the front door.

The door opened into a large entryway done in the Georgian style with a receiving room full of tattered old chairs and large closet with a broken door. Beyond that was the sitting room, the first room with a sign of life. Well someone. Several broken and used needles lay on the group, long discarded, and the broken bits of glass from "dead soldiers", the small glass vials that contain single hits of many street drugs, littered about half of the floor next to a soiled and abandoned blanket.

Jeremy squatted down to get a better look at the "dead soldiers". He shook his head. "I am afraid I have to retract my former statement about cursed inhabitants. Indeed, it looks like someone took this place for what it is: an out-of-way forsaken building, with people evading it when possible. If you've no where to go, and are striken with an affliction like this," he pointed towards the needles "this nonsense about ghosts and a cursed home is a god-sent present. This also explains why things are being moved in-between visits, or why moaning can hear beard outside atimes."

He carefully listened. It would be preferable if they were alone tonight, after all. Unbidden surprises would be most unwelcome.

The Venture gritted his teeth slightly. Of course Kine would use any place to escape their miserable lives. It was parts pitiful and disgusting. Of course they would assume that a lack of living flesh was reason to assume no one saw them indulge in a quick high. Even if ghost weren't trapped here it the act itself was still disrespectful as fuck, to the home, to those who might use it late and most of all to themselves.

He kicked at one the vials, if only to vent his annoyance and muttered "watch yourself, we don't want a trip to the hospital. " He said, more for the camera than anything else. Needles might have been more of a problem for them but a cut that was caught on camera and healed? That would be caught by the assholes in the comments section.

He scans the room once more, with the camera, watching through the view finder.

There was a dining room beyond that, a large open room that had been long ago emptied, and a staircase up to the right of the living room. Several doors, all closed, were connected to the dining room. The double doors probably led to the a kitchen or at least a preparation and serving area, the others were all single doors.

The stairs were old. They did not appear to be in good shape.

Jeremy put some pressure on a step, to elicit noise. " As you can see, the rotten state of the mansion allows for a multitude of noises, and taking the current... inhabitant or inhabitants into consideration, sudden noises, smells and lights are less a intriguing mistery, and more a sobering, pitiful matter of fact. Not at all unnatural, but rather very organic everyday misery. For shame.
Well, with this I think we can safely say we disproved all claims of any supernatural happenings already. Nonetheless, I believe it is customary to take a tour of the mansion in a show of bravery? Well, climbing those stairs certainly takes a good deal of recklessness, ghost or no ghost"
Jeremy said with a slight smile towards Garett.
He raised his eyebrows and tilted his head towards the dining room door. His implied question: "Want to go there next?"

Garret shrugged. He would return anyway with a couple of ghouls and have them run around like a chicken with their head cut off, but he could see no harm in a pre lockdown tour.

Jeremy took that as a yes and opened the door, peeking inside.
Being attacked by some drugged-out lunatic on video would be raising unnecessary questions, so no harm in being careful.
