Whose Lay Line is it Anyway?

The streets of Manhattan, constantly in the shadow of the towers in more ways than one. Here is where all Mage scenes and glimpses go.

Whose Lay Line is it Anyway?

The Mysterium were hosting the discussion in one of the classrooms on the main floor of the Athenaeum. Billy Martin had signed out the old (and potentially obsolete) Lay Line map of the City and had an overlay with an up to date (as of thirty minutes ago) security outline prepared to be placed over the main city map. A second map, one featuring the information discovered by Noctum and Aurora, sat next to the older map of New York.

The Censor of the Mysterium had spent most of the last half hour preparing, he hardly even noticed the Neokoros putting on a pot of coffee and dropping off a box of fresh muffins, and Billy Martin's work was greeted with a nod by Doc Vincent when the Hierophant entered the room.

"So how many are we expecting?"

The Hierophant poured himself a coffee. "Yourself, myself, Noctum, Blueline, Aurora, Regina, Mockingbird and Fìrinn."

"That won't be enough to draw and double check a whole new map."

"Mockingbird and Blueline are here to see what we need from their Orders, there will be some exploring of red areas and they can judge how much protection those teams will require. Centurion's detailed Aurora to us in order to make sure that this is done right. Regina's a Master of Prime, the Obrimos Councilor and could probably map the rest of Brooklyn by herself. Fìrinn's the head of Gryffindor and this is field work."

"Can I ask -" The Moros was not able to finish the sentence before Doc Vincent shook his head.

"There is nothing to ask about." Billy nodded as a look of understanding formed on his face.

"Coffee's good."

"Very. It's the new guy, just moved here from Maine."

"Well they teach their kids to make good coffee in Maine."

Noctum slipped into the room, dressed in her field work clothes, a satchel over her shoulder and two dozen Krispy Kreme donuts in her hands. "Panic over, I am here and I bought sustenance." She placed the donuts down near the coffee and started to pour herself a cup.

Billy Martin raised an eyebrow. "And here I am trying to lose weight." He made a big show of turning away from the pastries.

"So are you ready for this insanity?"

Noctum laughed "We will come back to the diet subject another time. Now is not the time or the place." She poked her tongue out at Billy Martin.

"As for the Insanity, yes I am."

"Should be fun, nothing major, just all of our lay line maps are potentially wrong." Billy sighed and helped himself to a donut in despair.

Noctum took a bite of her donut, taking time to chew and swallow. She washed it down with a mouthful hot coffee. "On the positive side, it's provided a potential clue. Sure it's a lot of work, but when have we been afraid of hard work? If what I suspect is correct it gives us an idea of the how... and potentially what Witcher was up to. If my suspicion is wrong then we have updated all our lay line records."

Billy Martin nodded as the door opened behind Noctum.

It was Mockingbird from the Guardians. She smiled, waved, and went for coffee.

The Guardian raised an eyebrow. "All-Nighter in the Library again?"

The door opened again and a pair of Arrow entered, Aurora first and then Blueline. Aurora tossed a nod at Noctum and both of them went for coffee.

Seems that coffee was popular this morning.

"The yawning time of morning but still morning." Mockingbird took a sip, more a gulp, of her own coffee.

Fìrinn was the next to arrive, the Mastigos appearing as if she was just finishing a jog - her hair was tied back in a pony tail and she wore a light Oxford Blues sweater, track pants and running shoes. She nodded at Noctum and the rest of those assembled upon her entry into the room and grabbed a bottle of water, taking a pair of large gulps before sitting down.

Regina followed a minute later and quietly made herself a coffee before sitting down as well.

It was then that Doc Vincent cleared his throat.

"All of you are aware of the basics about why you are here but Noctum can you give us all a quick recap of what you found so that we are all on the same page?"

"The short version is the lay-line maps are.... not up to date. Aurora and I noticed that a line we were following was crisper... cleaner... more efficient if you will. They have been tailored. It was subtle, but once you see it you know exactly what to look for. There was a spur coming off that was not on the map. Naturally this reminded me of another line I had followed on a previous investigation which was the same. So we investigated a few of the other lines and noticed the same. We looked into the flushing-meadows area and the coney island area. There was another spur at Coney Island, seemed to be coming off the Manhattan Staten island route. The purpose seems to be to prevent the lines from bleeding."

"It was alarming how these were not on the records. I figured we had been busy but not that busy for that long. I called it in and had billy check. Our Geomancer died in the event and all the records were double checked.... by Witcher." She paused and let them do the math.

There were a couple of whistles and sighs at Noctum's revelation, which of course were expected, and the first question came from the Silver Ladder as Regina leaned in.

"No Cabals in the Consilium have reported issues with the lay lines in their territories, did you find the points where the tailoring stopped? Also were the spurs the only outlets for the created energy?" Sharp questions from someone who understood Prime. Trying to get at the edges of the issue and see how big it was.
