The Chirping of Songbirds in the Morning

A thick fog was covering the landscape, even into the late morning. Through this fog a bird was flying; narrowly missing trees and joggers alike. The anchor allowing this bird to fly so decisively through such a dense fog was someone who was singing. The vocals from this girl were almost so distinct, so clear; it was as if her singing could be heard over the traffic of cars close by. 'Come down; and waste away with me. Come with me.'

The bird perched somewhere very near by, and to all close enough to see shapes within the fog could just make out the girl sitting just out of the way, as she sang to the song playing on the radio. 'If anything in this world could feel this real forever~'

'If anything could ever be this good again.' With the fog it was almost went unnoticed as the bird landed close to the girl as she sang. Hopping around a few times before jumping onto her knee and settling down to continue listening.

'The only thing I'll ask of you; you gotta promise not to stop when i say when.' With the final lyrics the song ended; and it changed to the pair of radio hosts that played the song to start with. People nearby continued on their way, with only a few lingering to see if she would continue singing another song.

The bird jumped onto the girls shoulder and chirped into her ears, "that was wonderful! I'm even happier now than when I decided to help you before!"

The girl tilted her head toward the bird and asked, 'who are you? What help did I need? Was I in trouble?'

"You're not in trouble anymore; and that's what counts," the bird responded back, almost glossing over the questions that were asked. "Oh! You know what we should do? We should grab some food. I'm kind of hungry after helping you out; and from what I saw, I'm sure you could use something better than the slop you were given before."

The girl was having trouble understanding the meaning behind what the bird was saying. She couldn't seem to place a solid memory on the things the bird was describing. Her stomach on the other-hand seemed to have understood the word hunger. On that she decided to start walking until her stomach told her where it wanted her to go.

It was a truck with the name Breakfast Burrito on the Go plastered on the side, parked only a block from the Central Park, that the girls' stomach told her to go to. "That'll be $5.76," the clerk said from inside the van. "Cash! No cash. No food," he said as the girl looked like she was searching for a wallet.

"We need money," the bluebird prattled into the girls' ear.

'Like ask to borrow some from someone?'

"I was thinking more like flat out stealing."

'Is that okay?'

"Yeah; should be fine. Just don't get caught doing it. It's bad manners if you get caught."

Deciding to listen to the voice in her ear, she looked for her first mark to lift some cash from.

Can you roll me Wits + Comp to find a suitable target and then a Dex + Larceny to lift their wallet / purse.

Melody managed to find a suitable target, very suitable target with his wallet already half hanging out of his back pocket... there ripe for the taking. Her hands closed in as she made sure she was not being watched, ready to snatch before the opportunity was stolen from her grasp as the man turned ready to cross the road.

(She can try again with a -1 penalty)

The wallet was easy enough to grab, her chance coming as soon as the light turned green. Gripping it with two fingers as the man set off to cross the road. The man had $84 is his wallet, a picture of him a woman and two young children as well as a credit card and atm card.

With the obstacle of payment overcome the girl sat on a nearby bench devouring a sloppy burrito that was quickly made; but none the less delicious. The bird took a spot next to her and pecked at its portion; taking it all in one small piece at a time. There was a feeling of clarity as her stomach had something to occupy its time with. The thought occurred to her, now what?

She must have said it aloud as the bird heard a question that deserved to answered. "Why don't you go home? Surely you had a nest you lived in at one point. I know you weren't born in that cage I saw you in. So why not try and go back?"

'You're a unique little bird, you know that?'

"Same to you. You're about the biggest bird I've ever seen. At least you kinda look like one."

The girl looked herself over, starting with her hands; rough and feathery all at once. 'Huh. Now that you mention it; I don't think I always looked like this... But then, how am I suppose to look if not like this?' She looked into the crowd, and started to stare off into space as the people walked by.

--

Her attention was snapped back with the flying ball of feathers chirping only a few inches from the girls' nose. "Hey! Have you been listening to me?!"

'What?! Huh? Where's the fire? What's going on?'

"... Nevermind. You're a real scatterbrain you know that. I'm taking a nap, so careful what you lay up against." With that the feathered companion worked its way into the folds of the hooded sweatshirt and went silent.

Feeling the stiffness of sitting still too long, the girl decided that taking a walk in the nearby park would be a good stretch, and be a nice change of scenery.

The burrito was average, somewhere between authentic Mexican restaurant and Taco Bell. The walk in the park happened to be in Central Park, for a overcast cold and cloudy day it was still a rather pleasant place to be. An acapella singing group had a small crowd, a small box for donations and a sign that advised that all money raised will go to The New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The group had just finished a thrilling version of Don't stop believing, at the front of the crowd was a woman smelling like exotic flowers.... strangely familiar flowers from a distant land. She seemed to be enjoying the show, clapping louder than anyone else.

She deposited a $20 bill into the collection pot. "Please tell me you know Run DMC - It's tricky!" the group smiled and nodded at each other.

"This speech is my recital. I think it's very vital To rock (A rhyme) "thats right on time It's tricky is the title here we go.........."

Much as an artist appraises the work of another artist; the girl felt compelled to listen in on the singing group. As she listened to the group sing their song, she liked hearing the differences in the notes they sang. She wasn't comparing the differences as good or bad; but rather enjoying the unique new creation it became as they continued singing.

The girl was paying too much attention to the singing, to probably notice the one that requested it standing within arms reach; and undoubtedly doing a little dance to the tune. The joyful listening was abruptly interrupted by a sharp pain close to her left temple. The bird was painfully grabbing the girls' attention for the abundance of noise ruining an otherwise pleasant afternoon nap. "I'll remember to chirp next to your ears next time YOU want to lay down for some shut eye," the bird remarked, as she was barely audible above the singing group. "Are these people here just to list-EN," the final syllable came squeaking out as the bird saw the fiery red headed woman just to their left.

'What are you doing?' the girl said as she looked toward her left shoulder where the bird pecked at her head.

The bird was already back in the folds of the hood with her answer being, "Don't look! Don't look! Don't look!" Though it was too late, as the girl was already looking to where the bird was, but no longer is; and where the fiery red hair now bounced, along with an incredibly short skirt; if it could even be called that. With the girls' birdlike mannerisms, where her attention was now focused was about as discreet as what grabbed it to begin with. The effect was only compounded by the brief silence of the song coming to its conclusion.

The woman clapped and gave another donation. The group seemed to resume service as normal, kicking into Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up. The woman however seemed to notice them, her eyes narrowed for a second as she seemed to analyise Melody. A smile appeared on her face as she made her way towards her, moving in to stand next to her as she seemed to watch the group. "New around here?"

A few moments seemed to pass before the girl gave an answer to the posed question; she seemed. . . distracted. 'I don't think I've been to an event like this one before; so, yeah; i guess this is new to me. Then again everything today seems new to me.' She scratched at her head as if she was combing for an itch as she added, 'i'm not sure why, but i feel as if i stand out a little. Hmm... probably nothing.' Her head snapped upward so the two could properly see face to face. 'Who are you?'

"I'm Faith!" the woman said with a cheerfull tone as a hand was thrust forward. "I am one of the Sage Escorts." she said lowering her voice to nothing more than a whisper. "Sorry to ask but.... have you only just got out?"

'Huh?' She mulled over the detail as best she could understand. Okay... She cast another look at the lady's attire; bobbing her head because of her height. An escort for sagely(older) people? When she felt she had a grasp on the question she answered back, 'Hello Faith. It's nice to meet you. I'm not sure when i last went out for a walk like this, but it sure does feel like a nice day to be out and about.'

'Sure!' To her everything seemed new and familiar at the same time. She wondered what else the park had that it could show her; as well as some curiosity over the redheaded escort.
